18 tips to help prevent breast cancer

  • Other than skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in American women.
  • According to the American Cancer Society, about 1 in every 8 women in the United States will develop invasive breast cancer during their lifetime.
  • The American Cancer Society estimates that about 232,340 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed this year, and 39,620 will die from breast cancer this year.
  • It is crucial to take steps to prevent this deadly disease, and to spread the knowledge to your loved ones.
  • Here are 18 key tips to help prevent breast cancer.

  • 1. Vitamin A: It may help prevent breast cancer.
  • According to Dr. Joseph Mercola, “there is evidence that vitamin A also plays a roll in preventing breast cancer.” It is better to get your vitamin A through natural sources rather than supplements.
  • Foods such as cayenne pepper, sweet potatoes, carrots, dark leafy greens, and cantaloupe are excellent sources of vitamin A.
  • 2. Iodine: Make sure you are getting enough iodine in your system. Dr. David Brownstein in his book “Iodine: Why You Need It, Why You Can’t Live Without It” writes that iodine has anticancer properties and may kill cancer cells in the breast.
  • When it comes to iodine, seaweed is by far the number one source and is loaded with this nutrient.
  • You may wish to also include cranberries, navy beans, eggs, Himalayan pink salt, turkey, and strawberries in your diet as they contain a fair amount of iodine too.
  • 3. Insulin receptor sensitivity: Improve your body’s sensitivity to insulin by exercising more often, and avoiding refined sugars, sugary drinks and grains.
  • 4. Body weight: Extra fat can produce estrogen, which can increase the risk of breast cancer.
  • It is important to maintain a healthy diet and exercise to maintain the right body weight.
  • 5. Drink a quart of organic juice per day: Homemade organic juices made with fruits and vegetables can go a long way in preventing breast cancer.
  • 6. Omega-3 fatty acids: Omega-3s have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, which are believed to help prevent cancer.
  • Some good sources of omega-3s are wild salmon, fish oil, flaxseeds, chia seeds and walnuts.
  • 7. Stay away from sugar: Sugar is well known as detrimental to overall health, and new studies have confirmed that cancer cells feed on sugar.
  • 8. Vitamin D: Including vitamin D in your diet is essential for fighting cancer. Dr. Mercola explains: “Vitamin D influences virtually every cell in your body and is one of nature’s most potent cancer fighters. This is one of the most important steps you can take to protect yourself from cancer.
  • An Albany study showed that vitamin D triggered cancer cell death in the body. Foods like salmon, sardines, pasture-raised eggs, and mushrooms are excellent sources of vitamin D.
  • 9. Lymphatic breast massage: Lymphatic breast massage can help your body eliminate toxins that cause cancer. Please consult your doctor or a licensed therapist before attempting treatment.
  • 10. Avoid charred meats: Charred meat has been linked to an increase in breast cancer risk. A carcinogen called acrylamide is produced when meat is charred, which may cause breast cancer as well.
  • 11. Take Curcumin: It has potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, and studies suggest that they may help prevent breast cancer.
  • 12. Stay away from unfermented soy: Unfermented soy contains plant estrogens, which have been linked to breast cancer risk. One 2008 study suggests that soy and human estrogen may work hand in hand, increasing the risk of cell mutation and breast cancer.
  • 13. Avoid alcohol: According to the American Cancer Society, “The use of alcohol is clearly linked to an increased risk of developing breast cancer. The risk increases with the amount of alcohol consumed.” It is important to avoid alcohol or at least limit yourself to one drink per day.
  • 14. Breastfeed for up to six months exclusively: A 2002 study  showed that an increase of breastfeeding duration was linked to less risk of breast cancer.
  • 15. Avoid underwire bras: There is evidence suggesting underwire bras may cause breast cancer. John D. Andre, D.C., N.D. explains: “The UnderWires in the UnderWire Bra fall directly onto two very important NeuroLymphatic Reflexes. If a woman keeps the metal UnderWires on top of those reflex points, over time that WILL mess up the functioning of the associated circuits: Liver, Gall Bladder, and Stomach. Bottom Line: It will likely make her sick, slowly and quietly.”

  • 17. Stay away from synthetic hormone replacement therapy: According to a study by the Canada Cancer society breast cancer rates dropped with less use of hormone replacement therapy. Birth control pills, which are made from synthetic hormones, may also increase risk of breast cancer. Dr. Mercola explains, “If you are experiencing excessive menopausal symptoms, you may want to consider bioidentical hormone replacement therapy instead, which uses hormones that are molecularly identical to the ones your body produces and do not wreak havoc on your system. This is a much safer alternative.”
  • 18. Stay away from BPA, phthalates and other xenoestrogens: These compounds are similar to estrogen and have been linked to increased breast cancer risk.
